Frangula comes from the Latin word 'frango' which means to break - a reference to the brittle wood of the small tree. In English, the name is alder buckthorn or glossy buckthorn, which is rather deceptive as it has no thorns. It may grow to 7 metres tall, preferring the wet soils of open woods, hedgerows and moors.

Initially, the bark is grey, but gradually it turns a dark blackish-brown, with bright lemon-yellow inner bark. The bark may be used sparingly for human consumption and in tea mixtures.

Ingredients

Bark of alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus)
