Cloves are well-known as a spicy addition to Christmas cakes and bitters. The strong aroma of cloves is also frequent in Indian, African and Middle-Eastern cuisine. The taste is enhanced by dry-roasting at medium heat for a minute or two. 

The cloves tree is native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia - also known as Spice Islands. The fight for control of the aromatic cloves buds has had an essential impact on world history.
