Fenugreek is an annual herb originating in Western Asia. Fruits are small pods with 10-20 seeds each. All plant parts have a strong, spicy smell.

Fresh shoots and dried seeds are used as a culinary spice - in itself or as part of spice mixtures. Fenugreek seeds are a fixed ingredient in curry - which exists in numerous variations, especially in India. When used by itself, fenugreek will leave a curry-like flavour.

Fenugreek seeds have been found at archaeological excavations in Tel Halal in present-day Iraq - evidence of millenium-old use by humans.
